Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal: Which Is Right for Your Yard?

March 15, 2026 5 min read

One of the most common questions we hear after a tree removal in Mullins goes something like this: "Do I really need to grind the stump? Can't I just leave it?"

You can leave it. But here's what happens if you do — and the difference between the two main ways to deal with it.

Why old stumps are a problem

  • Pests. Termites, carpenter ants, and beetles love decaying wood. Once they're in a stump 20 feet from your house, they're 20 feet closer to your house.
  • Re-sprouting. Many Carolina species (sweet gum, cherry, water oak) will send up new shoots from a live stump for years.
  • Mowing hazard. A hidden stump or surface root will destroy a mower deck or send a tripping kid to the ER.
  • Curb appeal. Stumps look bad. Period.

Stump grinding (what we recommend 95% of the time)

A commercial stump grinder chews the stump down to 6–12 inches below grade and turns it into mulch. We rake the chips back into the hole (or haul them off if you'd rather), and you can re-sod, plant, or just let grass fill in.

It's faster, cheaper, less destructive to your yard, and leaves nothing visible. For almost every residential job in the Pee Dee Region, this is the right call.

Full stump removal (when it actually matters)

Full removal — pulling the entire root ball out — is heavy machine work that tears up a much larger area of your yard. It's only worth it when you're:

  • Pouring a concrete slab, foundation, or driveway directly over the spot
  • Installing a pool or septic line
  • Planting a new tree in the exact same location

What it costs

Stump grinding in Mullins typically runs much less than people expect — and we offer big discounts when grinding is bundled with the original removal. Get a free quote at (843) 289-7672.

The bottom line

If you're not pouring concrete over it, grind it. You'll save money, keep your yard intact, and have a clean spot ready to plant by next weekend.
